Founded in 2020, Ability United was created to address a critical need in Iowa: the care and support of adults living with disabilities, whom we refer to as our members. In collaboration with state agencies, we provide personalized services tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. These services include daily living support, skill development, transportation to medical appointments and community activities, and assistance with personal care.
We have found that members who are able to actively participate in their communities have a better sense of belonging, dignity, and purpose. On a larger scale, it allows us to challenge social stigmas by providing opportunities for people who have little to no exposure to disabilities to interact and connect. These interactions, over time, will help promote acceptance and understanding, improving the lives of individuals with disabilities everywhere.
We serve individuals on Iowa’s Intellectual Disabilities (ID) waiver, focusing on those with higher support needs. Rather than group homes, they use a Host Home model, where local families provide full-time care, leading to better outcomes for members who previously had nowhere to go.
Each member has a case worker who helps set personalized goals, ranging from daily tasks to community integration. Progress is documented daily, tracking attempts, completion, and challenges. Host homes are well-compensated, qualify for a federal tax exemption, and can make member care their full-time job.
Our mission is to provide members with the best possible life through community integration and dignity. Many members have shown remarkable turnarounds due to the respect and opportunities they receive. We excel at hiring dedicated employees, and are deeply passionate about this work.
